Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

As part of the island wide programme to allocate State land to meet the housing needs of Ranaviru beneficiaries, the Honourable Deputy Minister of Defence undertook a special inspection visit to the Diyabeduma Parakumgama Ranaviru Village in June. Follow up action was subsequently taken based on the matters discussed during the visit. Accordingly, the pilot project of the programme was successfully launched at the Diyabeduma Parakumgama Ranaviru Village in the Alahera Divisional Secretariat Division of the Polonnaruwa District, on 07 September.

With the welfare of Ranaviru beneficiaries as its primary focus, the programme aims to formally and efficiently develop lands allocated to them for residential purposes. The programme is expected to be expanded in the future to cover Ranaviru villages across the island, enabling beneficiaries to achieve their intended objectives. As the initial phase, a mobile service was conducted to initiate the process of legally establishing ownership of 191 land plots allocated to Ranaviru beneficiaries from a 25acre land situated in Alahera No. 26, Diyabeduma Grama Niladhari Division.

Accordingly, 21 land plots have been allocated to the Sri Lanka Army, 18 to the Sri Lanka Navy, 57 to the Sri Lanka Air Force, 90 to the Sri Lanka Police and 05 to the Civil Security Department. Formal plans are also to be prepared and implemented to develop infrastructure facilities in and around the Ranaviru villages, including electricity and water supply, development of playgrounds and construction of an electric fence.

The inaugural event was attended by the Additional Secretary (Defence Services) of the Ministry of Defence and officials, the Vice Chairman of the Alahera Pradeshiya Sabha, senior officials of the Department of Land Commissioner General including the Assistant Land Commissioner, the Divisional Secretary of Alahera, senior officials from the Office of the Deputy Minister of Defence, senior officers representing the Tri-Services and the Sri Lanka Police, as well as a large number of Ranaviru land beneficiaries and their family members.
