Colombo, Sri Lanka, June 1 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

The Army Headquarters Vesak Zone was ceremonially inaugurated by Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army on 30 May 2026.

Upon arrival, the Commander of the Army was warmly welcomed by Major General H.H.K.S.S. Hewage RWP RSP USP rcds psc, Adjutant General of the Army. Thereafter, the Army Chief inaugurated the Vesak Zone illuminations.

This year's Vesak Zone includes 30 large lanterns representing various Branches, Directorates of Army Headquarters and Regimental Centres of the Army. In addition, more than 450 traditional octagonal Vesak lanterns and 27 lotus-shaped lanterns illuminate the premises.

Adding further significance to the occasion, the Army Seva Vanitha Unit organised a Bath Dansala.

Following the formal inauguration, the Army Chief toured the entire Vesak Zone. The evening culminated with a performance of Mobile Buddhist devotional songs (Bhakthi Gee) followed by stage performances conducted by the Directorate of Army Band & Performing Arts in front of the Army Headquarters.

In parallel, troops of the Sri Lanka Army have also extended their assistance to Vesak Zones across the country, including the State Vesak Festival at Midellawela Purana Viharaya, Thihagoda, Matara, and several other Vesak Zones in Colombo.

Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and civilians from the surrounding areas participated in the event.
