Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 9 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) chaired the inaugural Project Board Meeting on the initiative to strengthen Sri Lanka's disaster risk management framework at the Ministry of Defence today (09 October).

The meeting focused on strengthening national disaster risk management capabilities, enhancing institutional preparedness and improving coordination among relevant agencies. The Defence Secretary stressed the importance of inter agency cooperation and effective coordination among stakeholders in strengthening disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response and recovery mechanisms.

The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka, Ms. Azusa Kubota, and the European Union Head of Cooperation for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Ms. Virginie Lafleur-Tighe, participated in the discussions.

Directors General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the National Building Research Institute (NBRI), along with senior officials representing UNDP, the Irrigation Department, the Department of Meteorology, the Ministry of Public Administration, the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC), Save the Children and other relevant stakeholder institutions, also attended the meeting.
