Colombo, Sri Lanka, Aug. 21 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

The Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), chaired a meeting at the Ministry of Defence on 20 August to assess the potential impacts of El Niño on Sri Lanka and review measures to enhance preparedness and response to possible weather-related challenges.

The meeting mainly focused on the current situation, forecasts and predictions relating to El Niño, its possible impact on the country, and measures required to strengthen preparedness and coordination among relevant institutions. Particular attention was also given to water management and the potential implications of changing weather patterns for the availability and management of water resources.

Representatives from relevant agencies briefed the meeting on the current situation, latest assessments and forecasts, while highlighting areas requiring continued monitoring and inter-agency coordination.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Director General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and DMC officials, Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Director General of the Civil Security Department, Director of the Water Management Secretariat, World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director Mr. Philip Ward and WFP representatives, senior tri-service and police officers, and senior Defence Ministry and other relevant government officials.
