Colombo, Sri Lanka, Sept. 27 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
A progress review discussion on the establishment of special district-level committees to curb illegal fishing activities and other unlawful activities carried out using fishing vessels was held at the Parliament Complex on 25 September.
The discussion was chaired by Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), and Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Rathna Gamage.
In accordance with the decisions reached at previous discussions, it had been decided in August to establish these special committees covering 15 fisheries districts across the island. Accordingly, the establishment of new committees centred on the 15 main fisheries districts of Negombo, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Chilaw, Ampara, Mullaitivu, Colombo, Galle, Puttalam, Matara, Tangalle, Kalutara and Mannar was carried out during the discussion.
Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Additional Secretary (Civil Security and Development) of the Ministry of Defence, Senior Coordinating Secretary, Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Director General of the National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka, Commander of the Navy, Director General of Coast Guard, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Nautical and Tourist Division), and a group of senior government officials were also present on the occasion.
