Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
A delegation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), led by Regional Representative for South Asia Mr Kristian Holge, met the Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), at the Ministry of Defence today (06 October).
The discussion focused on Sri Lanka's present requirements and areas in which further UNODC assistance could provide the greatest benefit. Atention was given to the possibility of obtaining approval for the maritime information component of the multi-agency Information Fusion Centre, with a view to strengthening the use of maritime surveillance information as admissible evidence in legal proceedings. UNODC's support to the Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard during 2026 was also reviewed.
Discussions was also had the progress made through the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, with regard to human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The UNODC representatives also briefed the Defence Secretary on their latest report, which highlights the emerging challenges faced by South Asia, including the region's growing vulnerability as both a source of trafficking victims and a base for scam operations.
Discussions also covered a new regional project of the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch, launched in September 2026 and covering Sri Lanka. The project focuses on addressing the misuse of artificial intelligence, online platforms, drones and other emerging technologies by terrorist and criminal groups.
UNODC officials, including Ms Anusha Munasinghe, National Programme Coordinator for Sri Lanka, and officials of the Ministry of Defence were also present at the meeting.
